How to Motivate Yourself Every Day

“Inspiration comes from within yourself. One has to be positive. When you’re positive, good things happen.” – Deep Roy

You see, we always think that motivation is external. That someone from the outside is going to come and ignite the spark inside us and push us to meet our goals and dreams. But let’s be honest. Life is lonely and no one will come to save us. The only option we have at hand is to motivate ourself. We must find a way to inspire our own self and consistently light a fire that will keep us going.

Now the million dollar question is, how do we do that?

The good news is that motivation can be self manufactured. It’s a skill that can be cultivated through conscious effort and strategic practices. In this post I will share with some strategies to manufacture your own motivation.

Motivate Yourself by Defining your “Why”

You’d be surprised when I say that “Motivation thrives on purpose” but it’s true. Before diving into any task or goal, ask yourself: “Why am I doing this?”. Exploring the deeper purpose behind your actions will help you discover your core motivation. “Am I doing this because I want to improve my health”, “Am I doing this for financial freedom, to learn a new skill or to contribute positively into the society?”. Asking these questions will help you identify your why.

Motivate Yourself by Creating Measurable Goals

One mistake we often make is that we set goals that are too ambitious. However, our brain works in a unique way. Our brain likes to get rewarded for small milestones. Our brain uses inspiration from these milestones as motivation for larger tasks and goals in life. One way to find motivation is to create goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This framework provides clarity, direction, and a sense of accomplishment as you tick off milestones.

Motivate yourself by Building Good Habits

Think of motivation as a muscle inside you. Just like you would develop muscles if you start doing strength training, motivation is a muscle that will emerge once you build good habits. It doesn’t have to be something complex, it could small and simple things in your daily routine that fuel your passion e.g. me writing this blog post right now. For you it could be a morning workout routine, a dedicated study time or any other consistent habit that powers your motivation.

Motivate Yourself by Celebrating Small Wins

The motivation hidden inside you is like a plant. Just like a plant needs sunlight, water, and nutrients to flourish, your motivation requires consistent nurturing. You can nurture motivation by celebrating small wins in your life. It doesn’t have to be only your own wins, it could be small milestones in your life – from friends and family. The simple act of acknowledging your progress, no matter how insignificant it may seem, reinforces the positive association with your goals and keeps you energized.

Motivate yourself by Finding Positivity

Our environment plays a significant role in our motivational levels. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology investigated the influence of social environments on academic achievement. Researchers found that students who were surrounded by high-achieving peers were more likely to set higher goals and achieve greater academic success themselves. This highlights the contagious nature of motivation and the power of a supportive environment.

Motivate Yourself by Practicing Gratitude

Shifting your focus from what you don’t have to what you have can be a game-changer. You can start by practicing gratitude and you will notice the change in your motivation. Think of your family. Think of your friends. Look around yourself and feel grateful for the abundance of good things you have in your life such as health, food, family etc. This positive mindset fosters a sense of contentment and fuels the motivation to keep striving for more.

Motivate Yourself through Successful Stories

Last but not the least, the best way to motivate yourself is through stories of successful individuals. There are people in the world who have found success in life against at all odds. Some of these people are around you. Some are far from you. However, the good news is that you have access to all of them through their content. You can find this content online via podcasts, books, documentaries and even TEDTalks.  The stories of their journeys can reignite your own fire and remind you of what’s possible with dedication and perseverance.

One more thing, remember that motivation is a journey, not a destination. The strategies shared above are just few of the many ways through which you can motivate yourself. It is important to stay consistent and choose a method that words for you.
